These were created around 1913.  Brandt was born in Germay in 1862 and studied with his father, then at the Royal Academy in Berlin. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1882 and worked primarily as a scenery (set?) painter in Moline Illinois, then moved to Chicago in the 1920s. Student Jim Stephnanidis is credited with assisting in its creation.  This painting most likely has multiple meanings, but the one that makes the most sense, considering it is in the school's library , is the the theme of the industrious student. This theme would suggest that the victorious Native American is symbolic of the industrious student, and the defeated Native American is the lazy and unmotivated student.
